Will and Won't

By: Tani

Fandom: Originals

Rating: PG

Summary: There are certain things that Kevin just won't do.

Warnings: mild slash

Claimer: This is my own original idea with my own characters. Don't steal! ^-^

Tani’s note: I'm not too sure about the title of this, so if you have any suggestions, please tell me! This is dedicated to a character from the Deathstalker series by Simon R. Green. Kind of silly, but whatever. So, this is for Julian Skye, who has the honor of being one of the coolest characters that I’ve ever encountered in all my years of reading. I love you, Julian!! Otherwise, enjoy, and do comment if you feel so inclined! Thanks!

It was one of those humid summer days where the heat clings to everyone and everything. Very few people in the town were stirring, and heat stroke precautions had been playing on the news for three days straight. Everyone was miserable.

Julian and Kevin were lying sprawled in Julian’s room. They had placed several fans at strategic points around the room and turned them on full blast, but it was still almost unbearably hot. The only thing keeping them from going somewhere else was the lack of a place to go. They’d thought briefly of walking to the store and the haven of its air-conditioning, but had decided that it was way too hot to walk anywhere. Kevin’s house was even hotter than Julian’s, impossible though it seemed. So Julian’s room it was.

So after arranging the fans to their satisfaction, they had flopped onto Julian’s bed. Normally, this would have been the perfect time for a little fun, hopefully making out, but now it was too hot even for that. So they simply lay there, with only the heat, the whir of the fans and each other for company.

Julian was beginning to drift off into sleep when Kevin finally broke the comparative silence. "You know, there’s a lot of things that I wouldn’t do for you. I mean, I love you, but there’s just some things that I simply wouldn’t do, even for you."

Julian blinked himself fully awake and shifted slightly so that he could see Kevin. Kevin was staring at the ceiling like it held all the answers to life, hair slightly messed up by the fans. "Well, that’s good, I suppose. There’s some things that I wouldn’t want you to do."

"Well, good."

Silence fell again, and Julian thought about dozing for a while, but found that now he was curious. "So, like what?" he asked.

He smiled as Kevin started slightly at the unexpected words. Kevin was silent a few seconds, then he asked, "What are you talking about?" Julian’s smile grew a little as he recognized the special brand of exasperation in his voice that he reserved just for Julian.

"What wouldn’t you do for me? Just so I know not to ask."

"Well, I wouldn’t quit playing soccer for you."

"That’s good. I enjoy watching you running around getting sweaty far more than is likely healthy." Julian smirked as he pictured his boyfriend all sweaty and flushed. Definitely liked that more than was healthy. "What else?"

"I wouldn’t cut my hair for you."

"Another good thing. I love your hair, and if I were asking for you to cut it I would have to be out of my mind." He could almost imagine its silky texture on his fingers now.

"I don’t plan on changing colleges just to be with you. I wouldn’t go out with a girl for you. I definitely would not jump off a cliff for you, no matter how good the chances of my survival."

"All good things not to do," agreed Julian. "Anything else?"

"I wouldn’t cross-dress for you. I absolutely refuse to be turned into some kind of pseudo-girl for you."

He stopped, and after a few minutes, during which the only sound was the fan, Julian asked, "Done?"

"Mmm. I guess so. For now at least."

"So...what brought that on, anyway?"

Kevin sighed. "I got bored last night. Your phone line was busy and I couldn't find anything I wanted to do, so I let Sabrina convince me to watch some dumb romance movie with her. It just got me thinking. I mean, the guy’s just like ‘I’d do anything for you because I’m going to love you forever,’ type thing, and it just pissed me off. Why should one person have to give in to someone else’s every wish? That’s bullshit. It’s like they’re saying that just because you love someone you have to give up everything that makes you yourself. So yeah, I love you, but there are just some things that I would never do just because you said so."

"I’m glad. I don’t want a puppet to follow my every whim. I like you just the way you are."

Kevin seemed satisfied by that, and pretty soon Julian was drifting toward sleep again. It simply wasn’t to be though. Once again Kevin’s voice pulled him back to reality. "Do you want to hear what I would do for you?"

Julian blinked, momentarily confused, before remembering their earlier conversation. "If you want," he agreed, more curious than he wanted to admit.

"I’d spend all the money in the world to make you happy. I’d jump through rings of fire to make you smile. If someone hurt you, I’d kick their ass for you. I’d tell society to go screw itself for you. I’d do my best to always be there for you. I’d even try to learn to like your precious hockey for you."

Julian’s heart melted, but he still did his best to give a reasonable reply. "I don’t need you to do all that for me. I just need you to be you and love me the way I love you. And as sappy as it sounds, I’d do all the same things for you, up to and including learning to really like your sport." Wistfully, Julian wished that it were just a little bit cooler. A little physical contact would be really welcome at the moment.

Almost seeming to read his mind, Kevin reached over to take Julian’s hand, and say, "You can go to sleep now. Sorry I interrupted you twice."

"Kev, you feel free to keep me awake anytime you feel it’s necessary. Especially if the result’s going to be like this."

Kevin pulled his eyes away from the ceiling for the first time in their entire conversation to smile at Julian. "I’ll do that. Because just because there’s some things I won’t do doesn’t mean there isn’t a whole lot that I will do."

End!
